Shelbey has been taking care of this patient for a few years. She was at his bedside through his care at Scottish Rite and continued to stay in touch with his family when he transitioned to Egleston. When it came time for his transition to CIRU, Shelbey welcomed him with hugs, a new superman cape, specially made by herself, and gifts for his brand-new therapy puppy.
Shelbey noticed he was not looking his best while admitted on the rehab unit and spoke up to his mom. She advocated for him by helping his mom notice these changes and ask for more to be done. After mom spoke to the bedside nurse, the team intervened. Had this not happened, this patient may have ended up back in PICU all over again, putting his much-needed rehab on hold. He is now thriving in rehab and hoping to be able to head home soon. Shelbey made such a difference in this child's life and continues to make a difference long after being his nurse. She is a blessing to our unit and an angel in this family's life.
