Recently, Rachel Creighton, a nurse from the PCU-2 at IU Health Arnett had a patient that thought he was going to die that evening.
His declaration was very concerning for Rachel. The patient expressed that he wanted to see his wife's face one last time. Unfortunately, a snow storm had closed the highway and many other roads between Lafayette and the community where his wife lived. Travel conditions were dangerous.
Rachel has family that lives close to this patient's home. Rachel was determined to find a way to meet her patient's request. Rachel had recently lost her father, so she understood the significance of this request. With the patient's permission, she contacted her sister and brother in law for assistance.
Facetime, to the rescue. Rachel's brother in law went to the patient's home. He used his cell phone to connect to Rachel's cell phone at the hospital, via Facetime. The patient and wife talked over an hour.
The patient did survive that night; and was so thankful for the time he and his wife could visit.
The wife later shared "Rachel's kindness meant the world to us. My husband and I were able to talk for more than an hour. We laughed and we cried. There is no way I could ever repay her".
The IU Health core values are TEAM, PURPOSE, COMPASSION, and EXCELLENCE. Our values are behavioral action verbs and Rachel's behavior clearly demonstrated that. Thank you, Rachel, for your behavior that demonstrates our value of COMPASSION.
