Kim is a nurse who truly exemplifies commitment and advocacy for the veteran. She goes over and beyond the line of duty to ensure that patients are given a high-quality experience at the Washington D.C. VA. Her commitment and advocacy to the veteran are evidenced through her tedious and diligent process of administering medications.
On the inpatient floors, sometimes the medications are not readily available for the RN to administer the drugs. Therefore, the standard process for receiving the needed mediation is to put in a missing medication alert on BCMA- and then wait or the pharmacist to bring up the medication. In the case for Ms. Kim- she does not wait for the pharmacist to come up to the 4th floor. Most days she walks down to the inpatient pharmacy department to collect the needed medications in a timely manner so that they are administered promptly. She ensures that patients are receiving the correct medications ensuring an accurate med-rec with their home meds and new admission med list.
Her diligence was specifically noted while caring for an elderly patient admitted to the unit. The patient's health was declining suddenly. Ms. Kim ensured the patient and family member received care above and beyond. Ms. Kim saw that the patient family members were struggling with making a decision regarding the plan of care and life-sustaining treatment. Ms. Kim became a compassionate supportive resource for the family. She used her resources to ensure the family members received the proper education regarding life-sustaining treatment. Ms. Kim's compassion and advocacy were heartfelt and genuine.
Her attentiveness was also observed when administering a heparin drip. She was very concerned that the patient was initiated on a heparin drip without baseline labs drawn. She called the nurse educator and looked through the nursing policies to determine if baseline labs were required- and indeed they were. She quickly called the physician to inform them of this missed step in the process. New orders were put in- and the patient's labs were ordered and the protocol was changed to a no-bolus infusion. Ms. Kim's quick and strong clinical skills make her a huge asset to the Washington D.C. VA.
