My grandson was admitted to the PICU in January. Since then I have been at the hospital every day to help my daughter with my grandson. During our stay, I have never witnessed or received the care that Simon Quintana has given not only to my grandson, but also his family. We are saddened when he is NOT our nurse. He is the only nurse that will come in, every hour, to check on my grandson. And it is not just checking his vitals and giving us a non-genuine "Do you guys need anything?" form of a question. It is heartfelt care and compassion that he has demonstrated during my grandsons stay.
Simon comes and takes his vitals, but he will also play with him, touch him, look him in the eyes and comfort him. If any alarm sounds he is in the room within seconds. Simon has also gone above and beyond his usual job duties to help. He noticed my grandson was squirming in his crib, so he brought a sheepskin cushion to place under his blankets to make him more comfortable. On another occasion, I was rocking my grandson and Simon came in and placed a pillow under my arm.
Another example of Simon's compassion; my daughter went the bathroom and when she returned, Simon was holding my grandson and patting his back. Also, the baby in the room next to us was left alone, most of the time, and I witnessed him rocking that baby and walking that baby back and forth, till the baby was asleep. Just recently I asked if my grandson could have a bath. Simon brought all the supplies to bathe him, unplugged all his leads, bathed him, put the leads back and then changed the linens on his crib, instead of just leaving the supplies for myself to bathe him.
Simon has demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and is an excellent educator with my grandson and with us his family, by caring and taking the extra time to explain his care and condition with us and stop and offer us his shoulder and ear to listen to us. I believe he serves as a role model for the nursing profession and a show of how thoughtful and caring Simon is in all situations because he takes the extra mile to make his patient and the families feel secure and safe and not scared and terrified with what they are dealing with. He was an amazing patient advocate focusing on my grandson and us his family.
