Susan Huron exemplifies the definition of an extraordinary DAISY Nurse. One day, while off duty and on vacation, she witnessed a tragic car accident. While at a four-way traffic light, a car sped through the red light swerving on and off the road. The car ended up flipped upside down in a lake. Susan and her family immediately pulled over, alongside many other drivers to help the victim trapped in the car. Two of her family members in the car quickly jumped into the murky water to help free the man trapped inside the car and to flip the car over and search for passengers. They then dragged the victim through the water, up the muddy embankment and placed the man on an angled dement pad, where Susan and her daughter, who is also a nurse, performed CPR. The victim had no pulse and was very blue in color on first assessment. Susan assessed the scene while the team was freeing the victim from the car and in the news video you can hear her yell "bring him over here". She performed several minutes of CPR before the police and paramedics arrived on the scene.
When the paramedics arrived they needed to dry the victim off before placing the LifePak pads on him. Susan, knowing that she had a tank top on underneath, took the t-shirt off her own back and used it to dry the man off. Susan and her family remained on the scene to give accurate statements of events leading up to and during the accident.
Susan's actions and compassion for the nursing profession made it possible to save a man's life in immediate danger. She remained humble when the police and fire department stated that she was a true hero at the scene. I am proud to be that nurse that served alongside my mom and our family. She is compassionate, professional, and very knowledgeable in the nursing profession with her 30 years of experience. That afternoon, I was honored to witness how extraordinary Susan "Mom" Huron is as a nurse because extraordinary nurses are truly never "off-duty".
