The person that I am nominating goes above and beyond his duties every shift that I have ever worked with him. Whether it is comforting and supporting some of the most volatile patients on our floor or making their parents feel as comfortable as possible, Zach is always there when anyone needs him. In fact, he is usually there even before anyone needs him. If I had to pick three words to describe him I would say that he is empathetic, invested and kind. He is invested in the quality and personal care that he gives to each and every patient. He is empathetic when caring for all patients, always treating them and their families with the utmost respect. He is kind to everyone he encounters, treating others how he would want to be treated.
I've watched him de-escalate a wide variety of patients with different needs. What made me decide to nominate him for the DAISY Award was how he handled a difficult situation with a parent. The parent was notorious for coming out onto the unit and generally causing issues when on the unit. On this particular day I had never seen the parent so angry about behavior plans that Zach had no control over. By sitting down and talking with the parent for a lengthy amount of time, Zach was able to calm the parent down so that he would be able to continue his visit with his child. He did not skip a beat and got right back to interacting with the rest of the patients and doing his med passes. He is truly a "superman" on the 6th floor.
