There are many reasons Ashley Moreno deserves the DAISY Award, however, there is one story I have in mind. It was a late night in the emergency department when we had a unique situation come in just before her shift was over. I had just offered her an LCR due to only about 30-45 minutes being left in her shift and she had just discharged all her patients. Prior to leaving, a triage now was called.
I had gone out to get this triage now and while I was grabbing the gentleman who had checked in for chest pain, his wife had a near syncopal episode in our waiting room. The wife agreed to check in as well, and both patients were brought back to separate rooms due to the need to have each on a cardiac monitor. Instead of leaving, Ashley stuck around to make sure the team was okay and assist them.
While checking on the team, the husband went into cardiac arrest. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to revive him. Due to it being 3 AM, there was less staff and Ashley offered to accompany the doctor while he walked down to the other room to tell the wife what had just happened. The patient was so distraught, and Ashley stayed with her and held her hand the entire time. Once the team had the code room cleaned up, Ashley accompanied her to go see her husband. She was extremely tearful and stated to Ashley, "Please don't leave me, I just lost my husband I can't stand to be alone and lose you too."
Even though it was past Ashley's shift and I had even offered to let her go home 45 minutes prior, she stayed and held the wife's hand. She came to me and offered to clock out and sit with her until her family arrived. As she did this, the family had shown up. I should mention that the wife was not even Ashley's patient. She did all of this out of the kindness of her heart.
Ashley has a huge heart and always exemplifies kind and compassionate care to not only her own patients, but all patients. She is a huge role model for new and current nurses. As you can see in the story above, she is very comforting and has exceptional people skills. I have had the pleasure of being Ashley's Charge Nurse for over the past year. I have gotten to watch her grow as a newer nurse, and I couldn't be prouder of the nurse she has become.
