Sam is a great asset to our team on 4 south. We had a young patient who had been on our floor for a few weeks. He had been very discouraged that his healing process was not going as fast as he would like. The patient was trying to get into the wheelchair with his mother and had fallen. The patient was unharmed but was in hysterical tears. Sam did not have the patient that day, but when he heard the safety response he immediately went in to see the patient. The patient suffers from great depression and drug abuse. He stated he felt "trapped" in the hospital. Sam sat down with the patient. He was easily able to calm him and stayed with the patient until he felt relief. Sam brought the patient a notepad and pencil and cards to help distract him from his "trapped" feelings. After speaking with the family about how their care has been during the stay, this family and patient could not stop expressing how welcoming, comfortable, and safe Sam made them feel. He was always someone they could go to for both medical and emotional concerns. The family expressed great gratitude that Sam not only did what his job was supposed to be, but he went above and beyond in helping their family heal as a whole.
