When word of the DAISY Award spread around the Surgical Floor, the first name on everyone’s mind was the same: Janie Sukut. Janie has been a nurse for 33 years and has worked on the Surgical Floor for 17 years. In that time, Janie has been a wonderful role model to her peers and a dedicated caregiver to her patients. She bases her care on the idea that the little things make a difference. Janie knows and stresses the importance of making her patients feel good. Not only does she take great care of her own patients, she is the first person to lend a hand to her fellow nurses and jump in to help without being asked.
I work the night shift so I only have only had a few opportunities to work with Janie personally, but all of those times have been very positive experiences. As a new grad, I had one day of orientation with Janie and it is a day I will never forget. I walked away from that day with one very important lesson learned, every patient needs a bath and their teeth brushed every day! She explained to me how something as simple as a bed bath and shampoo cap can make a patient feel like a completely different person and will aid in their recovery.
Later on, I got the chance to work a few shifts with Janie as her peer. I can remember so many times she was by my side helping me without even having to been asked. She would help me settle in my new patients from the OR and not leave the room until she knew she had done all she could to help. Janie was also the first person to remind me, and insist that I go to lunch. She would do what needed to be done for my patients so I could take a much needed break.
On the Surgical Floor, we pride ourselves on being the best and Janie is an outstanding role model to all of us and an excellent example of the kind of nurse we all strive to be.

I have had the privilege to work with Janie for almost 5 years. She is one of the most caring nurses I know. She is never too busy to give all of her patients the care and respect they deserve. Not just her patients but all of the patients on the floor. I cannot even count the number of times I have walked into one of my patient’s rooms and she is either bathing them, feeding them, changing their bed sheets, or doing something simple as brushing their hair. She always makes them feel special and helps to distract them from whatever ailment has brought them to our floor. She is a great resource for all of the new and not so new nurses when it comes to knowledge about nursing and medicine. She is someone you can bounce ideas off of or just laugh with on a day to day basis. She is a great nurse and a great friend. For those reasons and so many more, I would like to nominate Janie Sukut for the Daisy Award.
I could not think of a more deserving person than Janie Sukut for a nursing award. She is not only a patient advocate, but a mentor. I can remember the first day I started working, Janie told me, “Kaylee, always bathe your patients. A bath is as important as a pain pill. They may not remember if you gave them their antibiotic on time, but they will remember the small things you did like helping them brush their teeth.” I thought, that is exactly the nurse I want to be. When doing call backs to check on patients after they have gone home, Janie is a name often remembered. One patient recalled how Janie followed her out of the hospital carrying a cup of Miralax, which is one small example how she never leaves loose ends for her patients or the nurse following her. Janie is a person that leads by example, always putting her patients and coworkers first. I have had the pleasure of working with her for 3 years and my hope is that I can be half the nurse that Janie is. I look up to her in so many ways and am very thankful to call her my friend.
I have worked with Janie Sukut for 8 years now. I am impressed each day by the empathy and compassion she has for her patients (even after 30 years of nursing. She always goes above and beyond the call of duty by taking the time to get to know her patients and often just washing their hair (which I would imagine feels awesome after a few days in a hospital bed). I believe the nurse on the floor look up to her. Janie is an exceptional example of what kind of nursing care we would want to receive if we were in the hospital. Therefore believe she is highly deserving of the Daisy Award.
I have built a strong relationship with Janie Sukut over the past fifteen years working along her side at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. She is a joy among both patients and co-workers. Her presence is definitely felt in the hospital and she is a valued member of the Surgical Floor. She surpasses the qualities of the ideal nurse by genuinely caring about the well being of others. She goes the extra mile to help co-workers and patients. She has been a great example for nurses to follow. She always seem s to know exactly what needs to be done and is willing to drop whatever she is doing to help care for someone in need. I think Janie Sukut should be considered for the DAISY Award because she has lived her life to serve others and her presence has definitely been felt.
Janie Sukut has been an excellent role model and an inspiration to what it what is means to be a nurse. Anyone can administer the appropriate medications and complete various tasks in a timely manner, but Janie brings to the bedside true compassion and empathy to each one of her patients. She makes the time to make a connection with patients and family members with individualized attention. One thing that particularly sticks out to me is that Janie took the day off to attend the funeral of a patient who had been on our floor for over a month. Many of us took care of him, but she is one of the only one who cared enough to go. Janie is an amazing nurse, her patients love her, and I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Award.
I would like to recommend that Janie Sukut receive the DAISY Award. She is an outstanding nurse in every way possible. When I was training as a CAN before I was hired as a nurse, Janie oriented me for a day. She demonstrated an amazing amount of knowledge, skill, kindness, love, and respect to each patient as well as our team. She would go out of her way to make sure each patient was comfortable, including those she was not assigned to. I went home from that day loving the fact I was in school to become a nurse, because she had demonstrated to me what I hoped to become, a truly amazing nurse. She continues to do exactly that every day she works, and is so giving. I can’t think of a better person to receive this award than her.
Janie is one of the most caring and compassionate people I know. She illustrates every part of what this award represents. It doesn’t matter whose patient it is, if someone needs something, she does it. She has inspired me to pursue a nursing career because of her passion for it. I truly look up to her.
I would like to nominate Janie Sukut for the DAISY Award. Janie is attentive, compassionate and always goes the extra mile for her patients. She is an amazing nurse and very deserving of a DAISY Award.
When I started training as a nurse’s aide, I was lucky enough to follow Janie around for several days. Not only was she an excellent mentor, taking the time to make sure I was comfortable with my new duties, but she was also amazing to watch as a care provider. She treated all of her patients with dignity and true concern. When she would come into a room, you could see the patient relax a little, knowing that she was therefore them. Janie epitomizes excellent nursing.
For the Daisy Award I would like to nominate one of my co-workers, Janie Sukut. You will never find a more deserving person than her, just ask ANY of her patients. She has many qualities that deserve recognition, but the one a want to mention is her ability to give 100% every day she is at work to her patients and co-workers. I have followed behind Janie during many shifts and have taken over for her patients. Those patients are never lacking in anything. You can be assured that they have had a bath, their pain is well controlled, and their spirits uplifted. Her patients could not ask for a more attentive nurse to whatever their needs are, be it physical, emotional, or spiritual. In our hallway we have displayed all the comment cards patients have written and you will find Janie’s name on more cards than any other nurse. They absolutely gloat over her. As a co-worker, she is that one person to many of us that is accurate and insightful. She cares for her co-workers while they are at work and when they are at home. Janie has been a part of the organization for many years and I feel that work should be recognized in this way.
Janie Sukut is the Wingman you want to have with you during a patient emergency. Janie is a fine example of grace under pressure. She is calm, confident, and is able to draw on her many years of nursing experience when you most need her! She knows just what to do, and makes it happen quietly. Janie also inspires us to remember that baths are important in patient care, and that what we do is not all technology and expertise, but involves that personal human touch. We are lucky to work with Janie, and her patients love her!
