“On Easter Sunday, April 8th, 2012, God sent me an angel. Her name is Erin Kempfert, a nurse on the University Labor and Delivery unit at The Nebraska Medical Center. At only 19 weeks gestation I delivered a beautiful baby girl, Emily Michelle. She was too small to survive and is now in Heaven with Jesus. This was the most difficult, traumatic experience I have ever been through. Erin helped both my husband and me through this situation with such kindness and compassion.
She was our nurse from 7 pm to 7 am. It was shortly after 7 pm that the doctors were able to tell me that I was in active labor and there was nothing that could be done to stop it. Erin was with us constantly from that point on. She involved my husband in every aspect of the delivery and held my head while they placed my epidural. At 10:01 pm she was there for the delivery of our little Emily. I did not have the strength to see my baby at first and am so thankful that she was able to take Emily and wrap her in a blanket to help prepare us to see her. She was so gentle with our baby and helped give us the strength to hold her and see her for the first time. We wouldn’t have made it through this difficult time without her support.
After the delivery she took the time to sit and listen to us, answer all our questions, and have the minister come see us. She had such a kind professional attitude. She encouraged us to eat and rest, even though both seemed impossible. She was so attentive to our needs. I remember her being right there when we needed her and giving us space to be alone and grieve when we needed that as well. She was absolutely an amazing nurse. My family shared with me that she was so strong and brave for my husband and me, but she was able to share our sorrow and shed a few tears in front of them as they held our precious little Emily.
She deserves more than just an award. She was truly an angel sent from God on that Easter Sunday to help us through the most heartbreaking situation we have ever experienced! To her we are forever thankful! My husband and I have decided that if we ever have another baby girl we are honored to name her Erin in remembrance of this extraordinary nurse!
