Emily is an amazing co-worker. I recently admitted a patient to the ICU that was a refugee from Iraq. They had no family or support system since they had only been in this country a couple of days. The young patient and his brother were both very scared. Emily went to the gift shop and bought them balloons and a stuffed animal. Out of respect, she asked the family first if it was ok to give the gifts to the boys. Upon approval she gave them the gifts and a tearful child became a smiling child. The patient and his brother had huge smiles which then helped to alleviate the parents' stress as well.
Emily is also a constant advocate for her patients. Emily had a discussion with the doctors regarding a patient who was getting polypharmacy. She was concerned about the efficacy of the multiple pain medicines and the high risk for the patient to get ICU psychosis. She makes me proud to work here. Her compassion for others shows in the love that her patients have for her. Her knowledge and care for the patients is one of the reasons she has earned the respect of our ICU physicians and fellow nurses.
