Recently Mary "Kate" Reddish was assigned to a patient who was homeless and had been sleeping on the porch of an abandoned house. Through the course of her shift, Kate took the time to listen; she developed a real rapport with her patient and earned her trust. Kate also noticed the patient's birthday was the following day. When she returned to work in the morning, Kate brought a winter coat, shampoo, conditioner, and other assorted toiletries. She presented her gifts to the patient and wished her a happy birthday. The patient was completely surprised and very grateful for Kate's kindness. There was not a dry eye on the floor that morning. What made this moment especially touching was the way Kate used the patient's birthday as the context for offering much-needed items without making her patient feel like she was receiving charity. Through her thoughtfulness and generosity, Kate was able to help someone in desperate need while allowing her to maintain her dignity.
