Recently, a young woman who was 28 weeks pregnant was admitted to our unit. This woman had a ruptured brain aneurysm and was in a chronic vegetative state that was near brain death. The baby was delivered due to deteriorating condition of the mom. Although all aggressive care was given, there was no hope for recovery. After a difficult decision, the family withdrew care and consented for non-beating heart organ donation. Kristie cared for the patient for several shifts leading up to this day. The family said their goodbyes and left the unit. Kristie could not stand the thought of the patient dying alone so she sat with the patient until she passed. She spoke comforting words to the patient and held her hand. She did not die alone. Later that week the patient's mom came back and expressed how grateful she was for the compassionate care Kristie and the staff had given not only to her daughter but to the entire family. Kristie truly exemplifies compassion.
