During a day in the emergency department, there was an ACLS code in progress brought in and the patient did not make it. The patient's companion was inconsolable and was lying in the bed next to his partner for over 3 hours. No amount of immediate intervention was successful in having the partner remove himself from lying beside his partner.
Lucinda witnessed the primary nurse using all available resources, family, PESS, physicians and trying to get a hold of a priest to come to speak with the partner of the deceased patient. Lucinda came and spoke with the primary nurse and the companion and his family. She asked if they would mind if she called her brother who was a pastor to help him during this difficult time. Lucinda offered them comfort, compassion, and spiritual comfort to help ease the burden of losing a loved one.
The companion was willing to have her Lucinda's brother come in to speak with him. After speaking with him and offering consoling the companion was finally able to leave his side and go home. Lucinda went above and beyond and helped to heal this young man's broken heart.
