Two weeks ago, we had a veteran come to our medical floor, used the employee bathroom and reported that he had an accident because he was not able to remove his diaper in a timely manner. Then he turned around a proceeded to leave the floor. Nawal came to me to see what the Veteran needed and as I explained the situation, she noticed that the Veteran’s pants were wet. She immediately called the patient back, assisted with his hygiene and provided a clean pair of pajama bottoms. She placed all of the patient’s belongings into a plastic bag. The clinic where he had his appointment was called and notified that he would be late.
Needless to say, he left our unit with a good feeling; walking taller and prouder than before.
One week later he returned to our unit with the pajama bottoms cleaned and pressed. He was very thankful.
A lot of positive things are done for our Veterans’ every day but I will never forget what Nawal did for this patient. She is a great nurse who is caring and compassionate and I am proud to work with her.
