The Nursing Excellence Council made an exception this month and named 2 DAISY Award Nurses. When you read about these nurses, you'll understand why.

Julie Muldoon and Debbie Powell were nominated by a co-worker who feels privileged to work with these compassionate nurses who go above and beyond for their patients. Both recently cared for patients discharged from the hospital with similar circumstances. One cared for a diabetic with special needs and the other cared for an older woman with COPD who was financially destitute. Each nurse immediately realized on their first home visit that the patient they were assessing had no food. The nomination noted that many don't realize the reality of true poverty in our communities and that this is part of what home care nurses discover. Julie and Debby immediately contacted Social Services and Catholic Charities to intervene for their respective patient. But to bridge the immediate needs of these patients, each promptly purchased groceries from their own pockets, along with items from their own pantries, to ensure these patients had food until the wheels of Social Services could be activated.
