“Pat was taking care of a patient who coincidentally was admitted to the same room her husband stayed in previously who had since passed away. Pat and the patient developed a relationship, and the patient bought Pat a lotto ticket. She won a small amount of money and decided to buy a few more lotto tickets with her winnings. Pat gave the patient one of the Motown-themed lotto tickets even after the patient had been moved to a different area. Being African American, Pat thought to herself, ‘Why did I buy these lotto tickets? The patient is white and probably not even interested in Motown.’ The irony was that Pat discovered the patient's husband used to work for Motown Records years ago, so it was meant to be. This cemented a special nurse-patient relationship.”
