Emily exemplifies the kind of nurse that patients and families recognize as outstanding because each and every day she goes above and beyond to make sure all patients, not just the patients assigned to her, but all patients, are properly cared for and that all of their needs are addressed in a confidential manner. I am a patient who struggles with gender identity issues and I often feel judged when I am in the health care system as I look like a man but struggle with thoughts that I am a woman. I struggle with my faith telling me that God made you a man and that I shouldn't seek/want to be a female but I can't stop the feelings. Emily made time for me when I needed to talk and she listened, really listened to what I was struggling with. She did this in a way that made me feel comfortable, made me feel I could be open and I never felt judged while talking with her about my struggles. After taking the time to really listen to me, Emily then went to the nurses' station and looked up resources for me that I can use when I am no longer hospitalized, it really helped me realize that I am not alone. I didn't ask for resources, Emily just did this on her own for me.
