I would like to nominate Nikki Pfingsten from Sanford FBC as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. This nurse should receive the award for her clinical expertise and compassionate, extraordinary care.
I was admitted to the FBC for an elective induction. I was promptly greeted by Nikki who thoroughly explained what to expect during the induction. This was my third pregnancy, and I am a nurse myself, but I had never been induced before. I was very thankful Nikki took the time to explain what to expect throughout the day and took the time to answer all my questions.
A few hours into the induction, my baby's heart rate started to drop. Nikki came into the room immediately and very calmly explained what was going on. I knew from the alarms and the look on her face she was concerned with what was happening. I was so thankful Nikki was completely upfront with me. She helped me reposition which helped his heart rate come back up.
Another couple of hours later it was time to push. I had been pushing for about 20 minutes without making much progress. Nikki assessed my baby's position and determined he may be "sunny side up". She was again very upfront with me about her assessment and explained everything to me. She paged the physician who confirmed what Nikki suspected and manually positioned my baby for delivery.
After delivery, we had many visitors. Both sets of grandparents were in the room, along with my 4-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. They were very excited and a little rambunctious, to say the least. Nikki took them with her as she did my newborn's assessment. She let them watch up close and explained what she was doing and why. She even let my kids listen to the baby with her stethoscope. For the rest of my hospital stay, my kids were asking "where is Nurse Nikki?!!"
Thank you, Nikki, for an amazing birthing experience and involving my other children!! It is a day I will never forget!
