It was 7:10 AM; Yelena was standing at the nurse's station writing something. I said, "Excuse me, do you know what time the doctors make their rounds?" Apparently, she could tell that I was upset and had been crying. Without hesitation, she put the pen down and asked, "You need a hug?" I teared up again and apologized for interrupting her work as she wrapped her arm around my shoulder. She listened to me talk about my concerns with my brother's health issues and asked which room and told me he wasn't her patient last night. I apologized profusely. Her shift, I suppose, had ended at 7:00 but she was in no rush to get back to her papers and head home. She had pulled her shift, yet she was listening to me, hugging me, showing me that her level of caring and compassion goes above and beyond just her patients. Yelena helped me get through that day!
