My father, 87-years-old, was under the care of Melissa Burgio while recovering from an infection. I work in a school, so I had to be there for the beginning of school and couldn't come to the hospital until after school was out.
The second day he was here, I arrived and met Melissa. Her competence and awareness of my father displayed through her comments and questions, ex. "He's been sleeping a lot off and on today. Does he do this at home?" gave great comfort to my heart because I saw that my dad was really seen and lovingly, thoughtfully, and skillfully being given care. Melissa was kind. She spontaneously, with a genuine smile said, "I've really enjoyed caring for your dad." I could tell that she meant it and I knew Daddy was in compassionate care, being treated as I'd want him to be treated and as family cares; with their best.
I had questions and Melissa patiently explained the meds, lab results, and course of treatment he was on. She really tried to connect me with Daddy's doctor. She never made me feel like my questions bothered her but rather like her heart was to bring understanding comfort to me.
She seemed to have genuine affection for our family! She's the best!
Melissa also was so kind to my mother. She is a wonderful, excellent nurse and that embodies excellence, competence, and empathy! A jewel!
