There was an elderly patient who was confused at times, pulling at lines and catheters; when asked what she was doing, she replied that she was looking for her baby. Sam Gonzalez took a hospital gown, folded and tied it in such a way that it resembled the shape of a baby. She placed it next to the patient in bed to comfort her and distract her attention from lines and tubes.
Later when asked what that was in bed with her, the patient replied, "my friend." Sam works a very busy med/surg unit with rapid turnover, but she finds the time to show kindness and compassion to her patients. Sam was nominated for a DAISY Award by a coworker who appreciates her hard work, skill and willingness to go the extra mile for her patients.
