I feel like I have a slightly different view on the patient-provider dynamic having been a nurse for two years now and when I was taken to the ED for depression, hopelessness and being ready to end it all. I was absolutely terrified especially being admitted to the facility I worked for because I feared judgment and the effects on my future career. That is when I met Gina Gill; in a moment when I was barely able to hold myself together she acted as the support I so desperately needed and treated me like I was anyone else that had walked through the ED's doors.
Gina came in with an air of joy and caring that instantly put me at ease and allowed me to honestly approach my issue with the rest of the treatment team. I had never experienced a nursing professional who could both give off so much compassion without coming off as patronizing as well as spoke to me as though I was an equal and gave me more respect than I had ever gotten from a hospital staff member.
Also, while I was there I could tell that multiple patients were coming and going many in far more critical condition than I was in, but Gina was regularly there to offer a smile or to offer to get me anything I might need. It was because of her that I could muster the courage to confront my fears about my situation and stop trying to hide from it and for that, I am eternally grateful!
Note: This is Gina's 2nd DAISY Award!
