I had surgery at MCLC. Since I am 82-years-old and had previous cancer surgery, all my family members including myself were really scared about the surgery. This is to share my experience where I was fortunate to meet this amazing nurse who took care of me that night.
Being born in India and migrated to the US at a late age, I admit my language skills are not up to par. It was one of my major concerns how will I be able to communicate my needs especially when I am in pain. When Mercy Thomas walked into my room and introduced herself as my night nurse I didn't expect her to be my special angel sent from heaven. When she called me "mommy" I immediately connected with her as it reminded me of my own daughter who is in India. It was like my prayers were answered.
All through the night, Mercy took care of me with so much grace and compassion all my anxiety melted away. She took me under wings and I felt the protection and confidence that I am in good hands. Although I was embarrassed that someone had to clean me up, she did it with empathy, made me feel that she is my own daughter that there is nothing to be afraid of. I couldn't imagine how she managed to visit me in the early hours to make sure that I am not in pain and that my urine catheter is functioning properly. She never made me feel like a burden.
In the morning, Mercy took me for a walk, gave me fresh linens, and even went out of her way to make Indian Chai tea for me, she is a perfect candidate who deserves the DAISY Award Recognition. My family and I can't express our gratitude towards the care and attention I received during my stay. The competency of your hospital staff was inspiring, and I couldn't have been luckier that Mercy was on duty when I came into the hospital that night.
