I have completed approximately 80% of the evaluations and while everyone does a good job and provides our patients with professionalism and kindness, one visit really is standing out right now. Last evening I met Carol Ellenwood at the patient's home. The patient could not sing enough praises for BayCare. She said never once has she been treated badly, and she would never accept another agency. "Always BayCare," she said. While observing Carol perform her nursing duties professionally, taking vitals, asking about pain, teaching about meds, and nutrition the patient told her she had received some very bad news today. I sat quietly listening and observed Carol stop everything she was doing sat down with the patient eye to eye listened very intently to the patient, allowing the patient to cry and vent how overwhelmed she was. Carol offered ways to get through the day and that she would follow up and check on her. Carol treated this patient as if it was her only patient. I could tell Carol would stay as long as her patient needed her. It is wonderful to have clinicians who truly give from their heart and give all they have to their patients. Because at the end of the day that is what a nurse does. Carol truly gave her heart to this patient today and the patient will remember that when she needs strength, she will think of Carol and her teaching.
