Leann has been a nurse for over 10 years and lucky for us and our patients she has decided to spend the majority of that time with us in the Emergency Department at Children's Hospital Colorado. She is not only a clinical expert but a truly empathetic caregiver. You will often find her stopping in the halls to offer assistance to families or rounding on her patients to provide plan of care updates. After many years of watching Leann calm stressed families and patients through provision reassurance and education, I was inspired to write this nomination after witnessing the non-judgmental and connected way with which Leann approached a patient and his family who were being worked up for a non-accidental trauma. This type of patient is often difficult to care for without presumption and judgment. This family had been waiting overnight and when Leann came on in the morning she did bedside handoff and noticed that the family seemed uneasy. She took time at the bedside to hear the family's concerns and the fact that they felt unfairly accused throughout their stay. Leann was able to speak to our process and help the family understand that their child's health and safety was at the forefront of our care. She walked them through the workup process and was able to help them comply in order to assure the health of their child. Ultimately, the child received the care he needed and the family was able to return home with their child and the assistance of their community social services. This was in no way a simple patient or situation, but Leann's grace and poise with the family allowed for cooperation and calm to prevail.
