On Monday, I cared for a very difficult client. This individual needed to go to the OR for treatment of an open fracture from a GSW. He made it easy for staff not to like him. At multiple times, he used profanity and inappropriate comments towards nursing staff during his care. Ashley always maintained a kind and professional manner towards this man. 30 minutes before surgery he got into a verbal fight with family and left his room angry and shouting leaving the ED. The other nurses in the zone (including his primary nurse) made no attempt to mitigate this situation. But not Ashley. She followed the client to calm him, attempting to explain the importance of surgery. She spoke with him and family in our parking lot. It was her compassion and persistence that got him to return to the ED and have the surgery performed. It would have been easy to let this client leave. Ashley was able to see past his social issues and behaviors and understand how important surgery was.
