My mother was admitted on M4 with extreme pain and weakness. On Saturday I received a call from my niece who is a nurse that my Mom might need surgery and it could be a serious condition. It ended up that the surgery was not needed; however, it was a scary time for my family.
Sam was the nurse taking care of my Mom on Saturday and Sunday and she was absolutely wonderful to her; she was kind, comforting, and gentle. Sam was always there asking if we needed anything and would give exceptional care to my mother. Sam would always say how "awesome" my mother was and shared stories with her about her own children and would show her pictures, which would put a smile on mom's face (and mine). When I was with my mother in her room, she would talk incessantly about Sam and even to this day will ask how her kids are and tells me how she loved Sam. She thought "she was the best nurse she ever had."
The DAISY Award, for me, is to be given to someone who touches a patient or loved one throughout their stay. It should be someone that a patient remembers and talks about and is the face of CMMC to that patient. My family cannot say enough about how Sam has touched them.
Even though I am a nurse, there were times when not only my mother needed her, but I and my family needed a shoulder or a little comfort too. One of my family members stated, "Sam is so patient with Mom and Mom really likes her" I agree. Sam has a bedside manner that is beyond compare. Words cannot express how much Sam has done for my family. When I finally went home one evening, she said, "Go home and get some rest. I'll take care of her." Those were such comforting words that I needed to hear.
Sam's love for nursing is evident in all that she does. She is gifted with great compassion and empathy for all her patients and families and treats each one with respect. She offers support to new employees, her peers and serves as a role model for our students. She is always ready to offer assistance where needed and never appears too busy to answer questions. Her demeanor is often contagious and she genuinely finds joy in new challenges and in her daily care for others. She can set the tone for the unit on a really, eventful day. She is a pleasure to work with and is respected by all.
