For over two weeks, we spent our days in the ICU with our family matriarch, who had a serious diagnosis and had to be put on a ventilator. As with most ICU patients, our journey has been a roller coaster of ups and downs. During our stay, we were under the care of almost every nurse in the Medical/Surgical ICU, all of which were outstanding.
Tiffany Swygert was our day nurse, and she took special care of our loved one. She noted that our mother was a very private and modest woman and always treated her with utmost respect. Even before our mother was totally cognizant, Tiffany described each action she took, administering medications, giving baths, suctioning through the ventilator tube, drawing labs, etc. She was always careful to explain these processes to our family as well. She kept us informed of every detail. She was professional and more than willing to do whatever it took to keep our mother comfortable and cared for.
Tiffany embodies every characteristic that a good nurse should. She is calm, attentive, and she knows her stuff. She even colored a "get-well" picture for our mother. The relief that came with knowing Tiffany would be there the next day made our journey bearable, especially in the earlier days of her care. When we were given the news that our mother would be transported to the long term care hospital and that we may not see Tiffany again, it brought tears to our eyes knowing that the young lady who helped heal and revive our mother wouldn't be caring for her anymore.
The last day we were in ICU, Tiffany was on the floor but not assigned to our room. She popped her head in to check on Mother and told her she looked fantastic! Tiffany told her that she'd have to come back over when she was officially discharged and have lunch with her in the cafeteria… She really cared about Mother's well-being and future.
Tiffany is an ideal nurse, exhibiting every characteristic an extraordinary nurse should have. There aren't enough ways to say "thank you" to her for being the rock we could depend on during a very difficult time.
Even though it's been a while since our stay in ICU, Mother still asks about the sweet, young nurse who cared for her so well. We will never forget Tiffany and the compassion she showed our family.
