Compassion, sympathetic pity, and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. Our family had the misfortune and fortunate to be in need of nursing care for a loved one, and there is something to be said about going above and beyond and subtlety doing what you do every day without effort that people who are watching, can tell the difference. This is what we observed in Nurse Shelli who cared for our very sick loved one. We were not quiet visitors, with many questions, Shelli never once said hold on or dismissed herself to get out of the room. She was very supportive in her non-verbals and her caring for our loved one's ever-fluctuating medical care. This allowed us to trust that she knew what she was doing and that we could ask her for anything. She did it with a smile and never seemed rushed to leave with her other responsibilities (which were many BTW). You cannot teach compassion in school. We are told in health care that you must be empathetic, but I believe compassion is harder to pull off and be genuine. Shelli might have had the misfortune of having us as a patient, but we were very fortunate to have had her 3 of the 5 days we were on her floor. I truly believe she will be saddened to hear the fate of her patient. She will bow her head, take a breath, and move on to tend to her other patient's needs. Because of her compassion to understand our suffering, our stay was better knowing she was going to be our loved one's nurse that day. Thank you, Nurse Shelli, for being a subtle, compassionate, empathetic and competent nurse.
