I was charge nurse when Kim called me. She had a female patient approximately 80 years old who was just diagnosed with an inoperable brain bleed. Until this visit, the patient was totally independent. She and her family decided for the patient to be admitted to our hospice unit. She was getting ready to be taken upstairs but had asked Kim if she could go outside just one more time before going to hospice. Kim arranged for the patient to be wheeled on her stretcher outside with respiratory therapy before going to her room. The patient and family seemed very appreciative the Kim would do this for her. This was a very awe-inspiring moment for the staff as well as we knew this would be the last time she would be outside. Upon exiting the building with the patient, another coworker who accompanied Kim received a text message "to look up" this nurse and Kim turned around to see the MICU and cath lab staff witnessing this extraordinary moment and providing their full support.
