Recently, I gave birth to our second baby, a girl named M. My second labor was entirely different than my fist and one that no one could have predicted. Nurse Julie Bloom and her tech met us in the parking lot with a wheelchair as my husband had called to request help when we arrived. Due to Julie's perseverance and insight to recognize what was happening in that situation and to take action immediately, we were able to use the 90 seconds we had to get to our room to deliver the baby. In addition, this may seem like a small thing, but the tech's knowledge of which elevator would arrive first was critical information in that moment of time and situation. They literally ran me to a room in labor and delivery, meeting Nurse Cassie Ramirez there. Within seconds of entering the room, M was safely delivered in the wheelchair by Julie with Cassie and the tech assisting. The on-call midwife was en route but didn't make it in time for such a quick delivery. Without the nurses' quick thinking, actions and skills, M would have been born in the hospital parking lot. All three women were very supportive and caring, making a terrifying birth experience feel less scary. Their professionalism and communication in a nontraditional labor and delivery situation were definitely above and beyond their normal job duties. Without their exceptional quality of care and knowledge, we would probably not have had a positive story or outcome. We live in an area that has another healthcare facility that is closer, but nurses Julie and Cassie are the reason why we choose Aurora for our care. We will be forever grateful to Julie and Cassie for what they did for our family.
