A 19-year-old man came into the ED with complaints of pain in his feet. The soles of his feet were raw with open sores. The patient stated that he lives at a homeless shelter due to his family telling him it was time to support himself. The patient said that he walks everywhere, including work. The insoles of his shoes were gone, and the bottoms of his shoes were worn and cracked. Dave and Dr. W pooled their money and sent someone to Walmart to purchase shoes and socks for this patient and gave him money to pay for the medication ordered to heal his feet. This patient was so thankful he threw his old shoes away and put the new ones on.
