Cori was caring for a 35-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with an atrial mass that had resulted in an embolic CVA with right-sided weakness. This patient collapsed suddenly at work, and in a moment's time, her world was turned upside down. I was the night nurse following Cori that day. I had cared for this patient the night before and her mood was courteous, though downcast and somewhat sullen. When I returned the 2nd night, the patient was a totally different person, smiling and laughing while talking on the phone with family. Cori explained that the patient had not had a shower since her diagnosis and subsequent surgery to remove the atrial mass. Her right-sided weakness was limiting her mobility and function. It was the end of Cori's shift, time to wrap up her charting and prepare to go home. But when Cori learned that the patient really wanted a shower, she rounded up another staff member and both of them assisted the patient with a shower and hair wash. Cori's compassion and empathy compelled her to do something extra for the patient, despite the fact that her shift was wrapping up. This simple act of true nursing care made such a huge difference for this patient, it restored her hope for recovery and normalcy following a devastating event for this young wife and mother. Cori is truly an Extraordinary Nurse.
