Beverlea has always demonstrated guidance, poise, professionalism, and kindness within a busy and socially demanding Emergency Department. These qualities were on full display in early November when she recognized an unfortunate and dangerous situation.
A patient at St Thomas Rutherford's Emergency Department was seen with a family member who suffered from severe mental disabilities. This young woman with mental disabilities could not care for herself, let alone convey any dangers she was experiencing. Beverlea's experience and instincts clued her in on potential abuse that this young woman was enduring, and she quickly activated the appropriate sources and outlets to find safe refuge.
Unfortunately, political barriers prevented this young woman from being saved that night, however, Beverlea pursued diligently and with a purpose. Beverlea continued to follow up, every day, calling Adult Protective Services, multiple shelter homes, Murfreesboro Police Department and others.
Finally, Beverlea's plea and voice were heard and this young victim was brought to our Emergency Department for safe haven until governmental placement. She was found to be a victim of financial, physical and possibly sexual abuse, as well as severe neglect. I have no doubt that Beverlea saved this woman's life.
Excellence is; doing the right thing when no one else will, without any thought of personal reward or gain. Beverlea will never hear a "thank you," from this person whom she saved. Beverlea, however, needs to be recognized, celebrated and emulated for her heroics and excellence.
