Sam is an exceptional nurse. She routinely goes above and beyond for our patients. Two recent examples of her going above and beyond are: first, a patient was paying a large out of the pocket expense to cover his INR home monitoring equipment. The patient was currently waiting for a heart transplant and close monitoring of his anticoagulation was required. Sam spent countless hours going back and forth between the patient's insurance company and the DME supplier to get coverage straightened out. The patient was extremely grateful that she took the time to help.
The second example was with a patient who was very complex and chronically ill. The patient has been in and out of the hospital frequently and was also experiencing homelessness. He and his companion dog would live out of his truck/small trailer. Sam worked diligently to help him with forms and paperwork in order to secure housing. Sam is so empathetic that she was also very concerned about this patient's dog. The patient had no immediate family or friends and when he would be admitted into the hospital the dog would be alone. Sam told the patient to let her know when he would be admitted so that she could help arrange care for his dog. The patient's only possession was the dog. Sam's thoughtfulness certainly made a positive impact on the patient. Sam also continued to work with the patient to make sure he was been seen by his PCP as scheduled to prevent future hospitalizations. The patient now trusts Sam and sees her a valuable source of support which has significantly improved the patient's outlook.
