Brian was a nurse for my mama during her serious illness recently at Swedish. I don't know that I have adequate enough words to describe the differences Brian made in helping to save my Mama's life. In the commotion of all that was happening, I have to honestly say that I don't remember the 1st time Brian was "on shift" with her. In hindsight, I know this is because of his gentle and humble demeanor. He was simply there, using his book knowledge and experience with such competence while showing such empathy to my mama with absolutely no knowledge of the person she was just a week ago.
I am very aware that Brian had other patients and duties while caring for her, but he never once seemed rushed or distracted! I always felt that my mama was his priority. Time and again he would find new ways to keep her stabilized and comfortable. Watching him work was like watching a choreographed dance, mixing clinical expertise, dignity, compassion, respect, courage, and art.
Above all, Brian found some way to not only care for Mama but cared for our whole family during a sickeningly difficult time in life. He purposefully helped to hold all of the intricate loose ends together for us all. Specifically, Brian held us strong when nothing felt right. Times when medical staff didn't agree with each other. Times when we didn't agree with Doctors. Times when the family didn't fully agree with each other. Times when we all wanted what was best for Mama.
Brian advocated for her and anticipated her needs. He held us strong emotionally and physically. I've never fully understood the depth of a nurse's duties until we needed them so desperately. I may not remember the 1st time Brian cared for my Mama, but I can guarantee, I remember so many more. His presence was enormous and provided comfort that could never be duplicated! It was not what the nurse did, it was how he treated Mama and also cared for our family that helped us together through the most difficult time in our lives.
