Recently, Vascular OR had three cases and Shane was our on-call Recovery RN. We called him in for the first patient that he recovered in Vascular PACU. Once the first patient was recovered, Shane came into the Hybrid OR and offered his assistance with our second case. He obtained report on the patient early and offered to take the patient back to their room post-op so that we could continue on to our next case. Shane did the same for the third case. By providing this service he saved everyone involved close to an hour of time. The next day, we were advised the case would be finished in about an hour so we called him in. He came to the Hybrid OR room and offered assistance throughout the very difficult case that proceeded to take well past the original hour time frame. Once it was determined that the patient would remain intubated and he would not be needed for recovery, he offered his assistance to Vascular ICU as well.
Another time, Shane and another RN were 15 mins from their shift ending and we had an emergency case for Vascular OR. The patient arrived by helicopter and Shane and another RN immediately took the patient into Vascular PACU to prepare them for the OR while we were preparing the room. This enabled the surgeon and anesthesiologist to speak with the patient, get orders in for blood work and reassure the patient of the procedure in a timely and most compassionate manner (instead of in an OR hallway). Shane is always pleasant and goes out of his way to assist others. He exemplifies our core values and is always a joy to work with. This is reflected in his patient care. As a unit, we strive to promote teamwork between our departments and provide quality care to our patients. Shane goes above and beyond demonstrating this.
