Erika always ends up taking care of the most complex and high-acuity patients. Nevertheless, she has always offered the best care to our patients and their families. Just today, I saw Erika tearing up after she saw one of our 'frequent' oncology patients being admitted to the PICU in an end-stage status. Today reminded me of a specific incident that I shared with Erika when I was a PGY1 and she was taking care of a patient at night; the patient developed severe withdrawal from short acting benzo. During the whole night shift, Erika remained at bedside and addressed mom's concerns repeatedly; mom was very frustrated and I can imagine any health care provider to be easily frustrated by this situation. Instead, Erika addressed it in a very professional way, making sure to deliver safe care to the patient. Though she can have rough days when taking care of complex patients, Erika does not miss pertinent details, but most importantly keeps a smile and a positive working environment. She is an example of a great spirit to work with, and she makes a difference in the care we provide.
