A patient was admitted to the hospital with increasing shortness of breath, and Jane was her nurse over the weekend. Jane went out of her way to find a recliner chair so this patient could try sleeping in it. She also got an oxygen tank for the wheelchair so her children could wheel their mom around the unit and spend time with her. Jane also stayed calm when the patient's blood pressure was high all day, and she paged the doctor continually until she got the medications needed to help with the blood pressure or any of her other needs.
Jane also got the husband out of the room to talk with the doctor without alarming the children to the problem of their mom having increased breathing issues and how her condition was declining. Once the family decided to do everything for the patient's comfort, Jane took the time to explain what was happening, what each medication was for and what they would see them do for her, and how fast they would work. She also kindly encouraged the patient to take the medications to ease her suffering when she was resisting, without making her upset with the family. When shift change was happening, the family asked Jane to stay and continue taking care of this patient because she really connected with them.
