My mom had surgery yesterday and was very, very afraid. Though her physician and other HC team members had already spoken with her about what to expect, she was still afraid. When Lizelle walked in, she was so happy, and pleasant and seemed excited to be here that it was infectious. Everyone felt better and happier because of her presence. And all night her mood and disposition never changed. I was amazed and pleasantly surprised. My mom had to constantly urinate, I mean every single time I would fall asleep she had to go. Lizelle would come in, immediately after us pressing the call button, I mean within seconds, just as cheerful as she was at the beginning of the shift and be a-ok and make sure my mom knew that she was here for her! She even stopped eating her lunch to come immediately and when she came in the room, she told my mom that she wasn't doing anything more important than caring for her. That made me feel so much better about my mom being here. Every single worry that I had dissipated. And my mom had to go every 10 minutes. Usually, that would evoke a little irritability. When I went home my sister kept texting me and raving about Lizelle and how awesome she was for the rest of the night. She really, really was amazing and didn't change at all the entire night. That made me want to promote University Hospital to all my friends and colleagues, the whole world! She is the face of what every nurse should be.
