Lori Smith is a great asset to the Behavioral Health Unit and IU Health Jay. Lori is available to the unit day or night for the staff, AAs, and doctors for any questions or concerns regarding patients, new patient inquiries, and staffing questions. She offers insight and direction to the staff needing expertise. She does numerous inquiries for BHU, assisting other staff when needed especially at their busiest times. Lori develops great rapport with patients. One such example was a consult for admission to the BHU. She assessed the patient, developing a trust with the patient using a calm reassuring approach, showing the patient we are here for their needs. With the help of Lori, the patient agreed to have a much needed medical procedure. She even offered to be there with the patient before, during and/or after the procedure to help alleviate any anxiety or fear. The following day, the patient's doctor approached Lori with concerns regarding the patient's follow-up care and compliance. She made contact with the patient, spent an extended amount of time on the phone with the patient and a family member expressing concern regarding the patient being evaluated for a much-needed follow-op that day and the patient's future follow-up regarding the procedure. That patient made a verbal agreement with Lori to go to all follow-up appointments, including that day's, stating, "I will do it for you because you are so nice and have taken the time to help me. " The patient was never admitted to BHU, but Lori went above and beyond to help this patient making sure the patient received their much-needed care.
