A former patient came to the unit and asked to see Michelene. I explained that she wasn't here and asked if I could help him. He stated that he wanted to see the angel who was responsible for saving his life. He explained that he had been a patient on our unit a couple of months ago, in which he'd had surgery for burr holes into his head. He said Michelene kept paging neurosurgery and pleading her case to them and stood steadfast in insisting they come to the bedside to see him. The ICU team had talked with his family and reassured them so they went home for the night. Michelene told his family that she would stay after her shift ended to make sure neurosurgery had come by to see him. On assessment, the physicians agreed with Michelene's assessment, done further scans and as a result, he was taken emergently to the OR for a craniotomy to relieve pressure on his brain. He constantly kept telling me that he knows without Michelene's persistence and advocacy, that he would not have survived.
