Lucy was a nurse working in the A&E Resus in November 2016. I was first admitted to Resus after contracting sepsis from a mastitis infection. I had a 4-week old baby and was petrified, the illness had come on so suddenly and I was deteriorating rapidly. Lucy was there from the beginning, she kept me calm and distracted whilst I was being administered the necessary treatment, and made sure that my baby's needs were met as well. She was a wonderful, compassionate nurse who cared for my whole family for the hours I was in Resus.
She ensured I was transferred safely to the ward and took great care to ensure my mental needs as a new mother were met as well as my physical needs. I left Resus feeling calm and reassured about my illness, all thanks to Lucy.
Little did I know that just one week later I would find myself back on Resus with the same condition. At this point, I was absolutely frantic with worry and knew I was seriously ill. Due to the nature of my condition I was conscious throughout the whole ordeal. I was an absolute wreck both physically and mentally and was crying alongside my newborn baby. When I was taken from the assessment bay round to Resus, Lucy was the nurse to greet us. She remembered us by name and instantly brought reassurance and a sense of calm to a horrible situation.
Due to the circumstances, I had to remain on Resus for a number of hours. Lucy kept coming into our side room to check that all of our needs were being met. When my husband had to take the baby away for a while, I became upset, Lucy saw my husband leave the room with the baby and instantly came in to see me. When she saw I was alone and vulnerable, she sat beside me, held my hand and talked with me until they returned.
Lucy is an absolutely outstanding professional who has the incredible skill of being able to identify the emotional needs of her patients alongside the physical. She lights up the room she is working in and makes incredibly anxious times calming and reassuring.
She has truly made a difference in my family's lives.
