I was a patient in NGH for 4 weeks suffering from pneumonia and pleurisy until I was transferred for rehabilitation.
I would like to tell you about one special nurse, her name is Karen Facer. She is a very dedicated nurse who loves her job. She is also very kind to all her patients and was never too busy to listen when I was worried. I always felt safe and secure when she was on duty because she would always explain all the things I worried about. The other staff greatly respected her.

Karen cared for my father with love and compassion when he was not well, and then when he took a turn for the worse. All the staff on Compton are so lovely and helpful and put the family that was visiting at ease and made them feel at home. I will be eternally grateful for the love and care he was shown, but in particular, Karen as she was the one who went above and beyond to help us through this difficult time. She is a credit to her profession, showing the true meaning of care at such an important time.

My mum spent 12 weeks in NGH before coming to Compton Ward.
Throughout my mum's time of being in the hospital, there were lots of nurses and healthcare assistants that we met along the way who would help. When we moved to Compton and met Karen - she was the one who spent time getting to know Mum and us which meant so much to every single one of us.
Karen took the time to explain why and how things were going; if we had any questions she would always get back to us even if she was busy. Unfortunately, my mum's health declined and Karen had the job of telling us about palliative care. She spoke with empathy, care and she was so sincere and made sure we were all ok and took time to talk to each of us individually.
Karen made several phone calls to the family at times when the doctor had requested and when we arrived she would always make sure we got there safely.
I feel that Karen went that extra mile for us, not only caring for my mum but the whole family. I will be eternally grateful to Karen for all she did and none of us will ever forget Karen Facer.
