My husband was a patient with a macroglobulinaneamia diagnosis who attended appointments at the haematology unit for 9 years. The team who work in this unit, including admin/clerical and all clinical staff, were absolutely superb during his illness. He was always treated with respect, ensuring that his dignity was at all times protected.
Led by Sister Steele with good humour, as it became apparent that he began to be very tired both physically and mentally, the team always knew what to say to him and encouraged him in all ways. Sister Steele was a star during this time until he died.
During this time, our daughter was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and once again the unit showed how much they cared. Nettie was on hand to support and encourage her. She still has monthly treatments and even though the number of patients has increased, Nettie and staff always have time for each and everyone.
