Eight years ago, my son, H, was being investigated for epilepsy. Whilst sitting in the waiting room of the neurophysiology department for his first of many EEGs we saw a poster for the epilepsy nurse specialist and a phone number. We called the number and within minutes Kathy came down to meet us.
From that day on Kathy has been like our guardian angel. Not only by caring for H, but supporting our family through a tough 8 years. H's epilepsy is still very volatile and Kathy is always at the end of the phone to offer help and advice. She has been into H's schools and carried out epilepsy training that ensures that all staff have a better knowledge of the condition and are able to care for H.
She is not only interested in helping to control hisepilepsy but makes it a priority that H is able to have the best quality of life possible, whether it be working with the school or the local authority.
Over the last 8 years, she has got to know H and I so well and knows who his favourite football team is, what films he likes, where we are going on our holidays and is always jolly and kind.
It might sound a little "gushing" but in the lowest of times she has not only been H's nurse but has honestly saved my sanity.
