Today a patient was admitted to my unit. Immediately he showed concerns about the time of discharge for he lives in Catania, about 200 km from our hospital. I assured him that he would be able to catch the last bus to Catania at 20.00. Unfortunately, time flies, and the patient was discharged at 19.30. My coworker, Valentina, who was assigned to the patient was listening and heard the patient's concerns due to the late discharge, therefore, she tried to find someone in the hospital to drive him to the central station but that was not possible for various reasons. The patient and his wife ran out of the hospital to catch the first bus that would take them to the Central Station of Palermo but as Valentina watched from the first-floor hospital window, the scene she saw was that the bus left without the two individuals. She proceeded to call the bus company and described the situation. The bus driver was contacted and waited for the patient and his wife to get on the bus. This story has a positive end to it, the patient and his wife got home safe and sound and Valentina was contacted by the bus company to thank her for the humanity she showed for the patient. Valentina went out of her way to make sure her patient was sent home safely. As nurses, we are human beings first who make a difference.
