I nominate Shazia Khan for the DAISY Award. My reasons are as follows:
1. She is always calm and collected even in a stressful situation.
2. She always smiles and greets everyone in the morning with a sincere heart. If a charge nurse greets you and smile and have a positive attitude towards co-workers, it makes you feel at ease and at home and that you want to start your day positive and support her.
3. She is very helpful with a positive and relaxing attitude in the unit, and always willing to help others in management of patients.
4. She will advocate for the patient during doctors' rounds and she will make sure that you as a bedside nurse know what the doctor wants and make sure that the doctor knows that his orders will be followed.
5. She takes the time during the day to come to everyone and follow up with these orders and if you say you are very busy she will extend a helping hand beyond her abilities and her busy workload in the unit.
6. She is professional at all times and have a huge knowledge base of the policies and procedures in the unit and can do training at the bedside to help you understand how to do procedures that we sometimes lack in knowledge, but she will always stay calm and her teaching abilities make you at ease and understand the knowledge that she convey to you, and consistently provides nursing practice update like Magnet education in PICU.
7. She is a REAL ROLE MODEL in the unit. Always dress according to policy and clean. Always on time on duty and always make sure that staff knows what are expected of them on a one-to-one basis. She will go around the unit during the whole day and make sure staff are comfortable and will give a helping hand to comply with this issue to make sure that staffs are ease and on time with their tea and lunch break.
8. She is excellent in managing the ward and to manage team work in the unit.
9. She treats patients and families with respect and provides culturally appropriate care, she is strongly motivated to achieve positive outcomes, going beyond and above what is expected to advocate for her patients.
10. She is a real asset as a charge nurse and a bed side nurse in PICU and many nurses can learn from her.
