Outstanding nursing care does not relate only to practical techniques but to the way a nurse can help fulfilling all human basic needs. Every individual cared for in the hospital is different and has their own specific needs.
For many reasons, the understanding of patients about their condition can in times be incomplete, leaving them prone to decisions that can endanger their health even further. This situation was one of those, but thankful to Nurse Anithamol and her amazing way of dealing with this patient, she helped him make a much more informed and beneficial decision for his own health.
I was on duty with Anithamol in the Coronary Care Unit when we learned that a patient was ready to self-discharge Against Medical Advice, even though the patient required a lifesaving treatment. Although Anithamol as a nurse was respecting the decision of the patient she felt that this would endanger a patient's life.
Moved by the outstanding care she has for every patient, she was able to do what no other member of the multidisciplinary team was able to achieve so far and revert an already made decision. It was only possible through the compassion demonstrated to the patient, the empathetic approach and full respect for the patient decisions. This attitude touched me because as a nurse I knew that this patient's life was saved at that moment that Anithamol, with all her skills and compassion, helped the patient make a much more informed decision.
